A 22-year-old East German man evaded Communist border guards and swam across the chilly Elbe River to freedom in West Germany, police reported. Four other East Germans escaped to the West in the past three days, bringing to 83 the number who have fled their Communist homeland this year. In addition, 32 Poles, who had arrived in Bavaria on Saturday, abandoned their tour group to remain in the West, according to police. And five Romanian families--20 men, women and children in all--found traveling without tickets on a train in Italy have asked for asylum there, police said.
