The government today fined General Dynamics Corp., the nation’s largest defense contractor, $615,000 for what it called 122 “willful” violations of the law in not reporting job injuries and illnesses among shipyard workers at its Electric Boat Division yards at Quonset Point, R.I.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said it was fining the company $5,000 each for 121 alleged instances of failing to record or misrecording job-related injuries and illness at the yard in 1985 and 1986. An additional $10,000 penalty was levied for what OSHA officials said was the company’s failure to record the detailed information required by law in another 53 instances of job injuries or illnesses. General Dynamics, which employs more than 5,800 workers at the yard, said it would contest the fine.
