Compiled from Times staff and wire service reports

NASA scientists last week announced another probe aimed at determining what is destroying the ozone in the atmosphere over Antarctica. They said two planes are to fly around and through the hole to take readings and conduct research from Aug. 17 to Sept. 29.

The timing of the flights coincides with the onset of the hole, or thinning of the ozone, which begins at the end of winter in the Southern Hemisphere and lasts through spring.
