Tennis Roundup : Teen-Ager Agassi Upsets Cash; Mayotte Loses to Rive

Andre Agassi, 17, upset Wimbledon champion Pat Cash of Australia, 7-6, 7-6, as five seeded players lost Wednesday in the $315,000 Volvo International tennis tournament at Stratton Mountain, Vt.

Agassi surprised Tim Mayotte, Scott Davis and Stefan Eriksson in last year’s tournament.

“I like playing in high altitude,” Agassi said after beating the third-seeded Cash.

The fifth-seeded Mayotte was upset again, this time by Joey Rive, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.

Also, Kelly Jones beat ninth-seeded Johan Kriek, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1; Chip Hooper downed No. 13 Paul Annacone, 7-6, 6-2, and Ben Testerman eliminated No. 14 Peter Doohan, 6-2, 7-5.

In other second-round matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Jim Pugh, 7-6, 6-3, and fourth-seeded John McEnroe ousted Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-3, 6-4.

Rookie pro Elly Hakami upset defending champion and fifth-seeded Melissa Gurney, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of a $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament at San Diego.

Hakami also beat Gurney Sunday in the final of the Northern California Championships at Aptos.

Third-seeded Raffaela Reggi of Italy defeated Sharon Walsh-Pete, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 7 Terry Phelps beat Marianna Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3.

Top-seeded Miroslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia downed Wolfgang Popp of West Germany, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the $250,000 Head Cup at Kitzbuehel, Austria.

Second-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Hans Schwaier of West Germany, 6-4, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina beat Carlos de Laura of Peru, 6-2, 6-3.
