Tennis Roundup : The String of Upsets Continues

Seventeen-year-old Andre Agassi and qualifier Joey Rive pulled upsets for the second straight day to advance to the quarterfinals of the Volvo International tennis tournament at Stratton Mountain, Vt.

Agassi, who eliminated third-seeded Pat Cash Wednesday, defeated Chip Hooper, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, Thursday, while Rive, who ousted fifth-seeded Tim Mayotte Wednesday, beat 11th-seeded Slobodan Zivojinovic, 7-6, 6-2.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl avoided the string of upsets with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory over Robert Seguso, while fourth-seeded John McEnroe advanced with a 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 win over Ben Testerman.

“That’s about the most problems I’ve ever had with a left-hander’s serve,” McEnroe said after Testerman won his first nine service games before being broken in the first game of the third set.

Only two other seeded players--Brad Gilbert and Christo van Rensburg--reached the final eight. Gilbert, seeded sixth, defeated 12th-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-4, while Van Rensburg, seeded 15th, eliminated Greg Holmes, 6-1, 6-4.

Danie Visser of South Africa and Kelly Jones also posted upsets. David Pate, seeded seventh, lost to Visser, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1, and Davis, seeded eighth, was beaten by Jones, 7-6, 7-6.

Top-seeded Lori McNeil and No. 2 Kate Gompert advanced to the quarterfinals of the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego. McNeil recovered from a first-set loss to beat Peanut Louie-Harper, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, and Gompert beat Sara Gomer of England, 6-4, 6-2.

Others advancing to the quarterfinals were eighth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat, who beat Kathy Horvath, 6-3, 6-1; Isabel Demengeot, who defeated Patricia Tarabini, 7-5, 6-0, and Nathalie Herreman, who ousted Maria Lindstrom, 6-4, 7-6.

Also, Elly Hakami downed Betsy Nagelsen, 7-5, 6-4; Raffaella Reggi beat Laura Garrone, 6-0, 6-0, and Anne Minter upset seventh-seeded Terry Phelps, 7-5, 6-3.

Kate Gompert defeated Sara Gomer of England, 6-4, 6-2, in the lone night match.

Top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia and second-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals of a $250,000 tournament at Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Mecir took slightly more than one hour to defeat West Germany’s Andreas Maurer, 6-2, 6-3, while Sanchez defeated Francesco Cancelotti of Italy, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
