‘Esperanto: A Language Looking for U.S. Voice’

Reversing the tide of skepticism--to an in-depth understanding of a great idea--is a worthy challenge. One worthwhile challenge, the implementation of Esperanto as a world language. The article reflects the skepticism surrounding this unpublicized world language. The awesome challenge is to demonstrate the phenomenon for what it is: a created language, which has grown in 100 years, despite tremendous obstacles.

We Esperantists, speakers and users of the language, must claim responsibility for both the skepticism and the lack of publicity. Now, Intertalk, a new nonprofit education corporation promoting the concept of a neutral second language for our world community has taken on the challenge to inform the public.

In almost every instance, we at Intertalk have found that the concept of world language is one that people eagerly accept.

How much more exciting is the idea of a global language, and the knowledge that an appropriate neutral second language exists: one that is regular in grammar, logical in application, and in which fluency is obtainable in a fraction of the time needed to master any national language! On gaining this knowledge many decide to learn the world language, Esperanto.

For that reason, Intertalk has experienced a new-found growth in the Los Angeles area. Classes in Esperanto are now available in the Los Angeles Wilshire district, in West Los Angeles and will begin in the fall term at Los Angeles City College through the department of community services.
