U.S. Scores 10 in First and Routs Nicaragua

Tino Martinez drove in five runs in a 10-run first inning as the United States defeated Nicaragua, 18-0, in Pan American Games baseball Wednesday.

Jim Abbott threw five shutout innings for the U.S. team, now 3-0 in the seven-game round-robin portion of the tournament. Nicaragua fell to 1-2.

In another game, Puerto Rico defeated the Netherlands Antilles, 10-0, in seven innings. Cuba met Aruba in the nightcap.

Martinez drove in six runs and had two doubles and a home run for the United States, while Scott Livingstone of Dallas had four hits including three doubles. Dave Silvestri of St. Louis had three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs. Four other U.S. players had two hits: Ty Griffin, Ted Wood, Mike Fiore and Don Guillot.

Martinez, of Tampa, Fla., opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the first and later doubled in two more runs in the inning. He is now 9 of 13 in Pan Am play--a .692 batting average, with 14 RBIs.

The U.S. sent 14 players to the plate and 10 got hits in the first inning. For the game, the American team had 21 hits.

Abbott, of Flint, Mich., pitched the first five innings, allowing three hits while striking out six and walking four.
