Kurdish guerrillas killed nearly 200 Iranian Revolutionary Guards in clashes in northwestern Iran in the last month, a spokesman for the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran said in Athens. Eight guerrillas also died in the fighting, he said. There was no confirmation from Tehran or independent sources, but the state-controlled Iranian media occasionally report clashes with “counterrevolutionaries” in Kurdish areas. The rebel group is struggling for autonomy for Iran’s 4.5 million Kurds, an ethnic minority.
