Police Break Up Protest by Ultra-Orthodox Jews
Israeli police fired tear gas early Saturday to disperse hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews who hurled stones and bottles to protest the screening of films on Friday nights.
The protest began just after midnight in Jerusalem’s Orthodox Mea Shearim quarter and lasted about two hours, said police spokesman Rafi Levy. He said the protesters hurled stones and glass bottles at vehicles and passers-by, slightly injuring one woman. The protesters believe showing movies on Friday nights desecrates the Jewish Sabbath.
Last weekend, hundreds of ultra-Orthodox and secular Jews clashed near the Beit Agron theater in downtown Jerusalem, where films were being shown.
