What Is the Best?

Nothing makes me happier than to read that Asian-Americans are fighting back and demanding their rights in the academic arena (“When Being Best Isn’t Good Enough,” by Linda Mathews,July 19). For too long the “model minority” has stood by and silently accepted a double standard. Asian-American students had to score higher on tests, achieve higher grade point averages and outperform all other groups. The fact that Asian-Americans must be better than their white counterparts in pursuing higher education smacks of racial discrimination. The UC system needs to re-examine its admission policies and find ways to keep a diverse student body--but not at the expense of Asian-Americans.
