Prenatal Care for Poor

Allan Parachini’s article on smoking and young pregnant women (Health View, Aug. 4) is interesting but incomplete.

Our government can find money for the war industry, for learned studies by the National Center for Health Statistics, and for subsidies to tobacco farmers, yet is too cheap to provide decent prenatal care for poor women.

In light of this governmental complicity in the infant mortality rate, it is unfair, in fact downright churlish, to blame the young mothers.
