New York May Set Entry Fees for Cars
A plan to charge tolls of up to $10 a day to bring a car into Manhattan in the morning could be in effect by the end of next year, a city transportation official says.
“We have to start thinking fewer vehicles,” city Transportation First Deputy Sam Schwartz told a national meeting of traffic engineers in Manhattan on Tuesday. “The city cannot provide for everyone who wants to ride in limousines.”
Drivers entering Manhattan between 60th Street and the Battery would be charged according to the number of passengers in each car.
Drivers without passengers would be charged $10 each weekday from 6 a.m. until noon. Those with two or three passengers would be charged $5; drivers with four passengers or more would be charged $3.
The charges would include tunnel and bridge fees, and drivers would be required to attach stickers to their cars to show they had paid.
