Tamas Darnyi of Hungary set a world record in the men’s 400-meter medley, and Michael Gross led West Germany to another world record in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the European Swimming Championships in Strasbourg, France.

Darnyi, the world champion, finished in 4 minutes 15.42 seconds, beating the previous mark set by American David Wharton at the Pan Pacific Games in Brisbane, Australia, five days earlier.

The West German relay team of Gross, Peter Sitt, Rainer Henkel and Thomas Fahrner won in 7:14.27, which is 1.42 seconds faster than the record set by the United States in the 1984 Olympic Games.
