The World : Beirut Marchers Ask Peace
Christians and Muslims joined hands in Beirut in a rare public protest against the conflict that has ravaged Lebanon’s capital for 12 years. “We don’t want a West Beirut or an East Beirut, we want a unified city!” the demonstrators shouted. The 100 protesters, carrying olive branches, came from Muslim West Beirut and Christian East Beirut to meet at earthen barricades at a crossing point on the shell-pocked Green Line, which divides the city. The march was called by the Committee for a Lebanon of Love, a group of anti-war Christians and Muslims.
