Earl of Strathmore, 58; Cousin of the Queen
The Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth, collapsed while shooting grouse on the grounds of the castle that provided the setting for “Macbeth” and died en route to a hospital. He was 58.
A family spokesman said the earl, Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon, was walking on the moors near his Glamis Castle home with his son, Lord Glamis, and a friend when he collapsed Tuesday.
“He just collapsed with a heart attack,” said the spokesman, Philio Ord. “It came as a complete shock and surprise, as he was very fit and had no health problems.”
The earl was a nephew of Queen Mother Elizabeth, who grew up at Glamis Castle.
He acquired his title in 1972 when his cousin, Timothy Bowes-Lyon, died without children.
Glamis Castle was the home of Macbeth, the nobleman in Shakespeare’s tragedy who ruthlessly rose to be king of Scotland by slaying his enemies.
