A South African gold mining company dismissed about 2,000 black miners when they refused to break a 13-day-old strike. Johannesburg Consolidated Investments said the mine involved was unprofitable. More than 10,000 miners have been fired in the strike, which began Aug. 9. An additional 41,000 workers have been threatened with dismissal or disciplinary action this week. The Trans Natal Coal Corp. said one of five non-striking miners hospitalized Aug. 13 after eating insecticide-laced food in the mine kitchen died.
