The World : Sudan Coalition Collapses

Share

Sudan’s ruling coalition broke up, bringing an end to the 15-month-old government. A joint statement said the Democratic Unionist Party was withdrawing from its partnership with the Umma party of Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi. The two parties control 163 of the 301 seats in Parliament. The statement gave no reason for the breakup but said Sept. 7 is the deadline for forming a new government. Sudan is troubled by severe economic problems and a rebellion in the south.
