Eddie Ahorrio’s grand slam capped a six-run fifth inning, and Wilfredo Velez struck out 16 as Puerto Rico beat Canada, 12-2, in eight innings to take the bronze medal in the baseball tournament.

The victory assured Puerto Rico (6-3) a berth in next year’s Olympics. Canada (4-5), which never has won a medal in Pan Am baseball, will have to beat Italy for the final spot in the Olympics at Seoul, South Korea.

Second-seeded Al Parker of Claxton, Ga., trounced Pablo Albano of Argentina, 6-1, 6-0, to reach today’s final in the men’s tennis singles.

Parker will meet Fernando Roese of Brazil, who overpowered Luke Jensen of the United States, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the other semifinal Friday.

Washington scored in the first overtime, and Evair added a goal in the second overtime to give Brazil a 2-0 victory over Chile in the gold medal soccer game Friday night.

They teams played nearly 200 minutes of scoreless soccer in two Pan Am Games matches before Washington scored.
