Pope to Meet U.S. Jews Sept. 1

Pope John Paul II will meet leaders of the American Jewish community Sept. 1, nine days before he leaves for his visit to the United States, the Vatican announced today.

The audience for the Jewish leaders will take place at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, 15 miles south of Rome, where the Pope resides during the summer months, the Vatican said. The Jewish delegation will be headed by Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, director of the American Jewish Committee for International Relations.
