Hundreds of Pakistani troops patrolled the cities of Karachi and Hyderabad, where at least 28 people were killed in two days of gun battles and riots between rival ethnic communities. A curfew was imposed in Hyderabad after six people were killed. Police said they arrested more than 60 people in Karachi, where 22 were killed and more than 50 were wounded in fighting between Pushtuns from northwestern Pakistan and Mohajirs, who immigrated from India when the subcontinent was partitioned in 1947.
