Arms Agreements Seen Costing Many Jobs
Millions of armaments and defense industry employees would be out of work in the event of major disarmament agreements between the the superpowers, the International Labor Organization said Wednesday.
It said about 53 million people worldwide are employed in military production and defense services, including about 14 million in the major industrialized non-Communist nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
A one-third cut in military expenditures could affect about 4 million workers in OECD countries alone, the ILO said.
