Sixty percent of Americans agreed that people with the AIDS virus should be made to carry a card to that effect, the Gallup Poll reported. On the other hand, 78% think “AIDS sufferers should be treated with compassion” and only 7% said they should not. The rest had no answer. One-third said employers should be able to dismiss those with AIDS for having the disease, the poll found, but 43% disagreed. The nationwide survey of 1,607 adults showed that 48% think victims “should be allowed to live in the community normally,” while 29% disagreed. Forty-five percent agreed with the statement, “Most people with AIDS have only themselves to blame,” while 13% disagreed.
