The South Korean opposition accused President Chun Doo Hwan’s government of using nationwide labor turmoil to justify a new crackdown on the democratic movement and to renege on promised reforms. The National Coalition for a Democratic Constitution issued its statement as authorities stepped up investigations of dissidents. Meanwhile, on the island of Koje, Daewoo shipyard workers reaffirmed their promise to end a three-week-old strike but demanded that the government apologize for Friday’s police interception of a hearse carrying the body of a striking worker killed in a labor clash last weekend.
