Plain People, Good Story

Congratulations on the fine story about Ohio’s Amish. As a native of Canton, Ohio, I grew up seeing the Amish and Mennonites come into the city to attend to their business. Then I moved to New York and was surprised to learn about all the fuss made about the Amish in Lancaster County, Pa. Heck, we had all those folks back in Holmes County, Ohio, and they were just taken for granted. There certainly wasn’t all that commercialization.

When I was attending Ohio State we occasionally would drive the back route from Canton to Columbus down old U.S. 62 through Millersburg. The state still posts signs in that area stating, “Be careful of slow-moving, horse-drawn vehicles.”

I was surprised that the “where to stay” part of the article didn’t note that there are all kinds of hotels and motels just 25 miles north in Canton, the closest major city and on Interstate 77. The National Football League’s Pro Football Hall of Fame is the big attraction in Canton.
