South African mining officials said that the 40 men trapped in a mine elevator since an explosion at a gold mine on Monday must be presumed dead, bringing to 50 the total killed. The General Union Mining Corp., owner of the St. Helena mine, said it has been established that the elevator carrying the men had fallen to the bottom of the 4,600-foot shaft and was almost certainly buried beneath 132 feet of mangled steel and concrete. Ten bodies have been recovered. Five men were hurt, but escaped.
