The Internal Revenue Service, trying to get Americans interested in their tax returns seven months before the filing deadline, today offered two free publications that explain many of the hundreds of changes made in the 1986 revision of income tax law.

“We are trying to get out the message that you can’t wait until next April to acquaint yourself with the new law,” Wilson Fadely of the IRS said. He said the agency wanted also to remind taxpayers that the law requires them to submit W-4 or W-4A tax-withholding forms for 1987 to their employers by Oct. 1.

Publication 920 explains major changes in the tax law that affect individuals, and Publication 921 explains changes that apply to businesses.

The cover of each booklet bears a warning: “Caution: At the time this publication was printed, Congress was considering legislation that would change or modify the tax treatment described in some of the discussions printed here.”

Copies of both publications may be obtained free by calling the toll-free number (800) 424-3676.
