Mono Basin, Hetch Hetchy

Share

Your editorial “Stirring Up Troubled Waters” (Aug. 27) not only troubled me but amazed me. Your castigation of Mayor Feinstein was uncalled for and her comments made a lot more sense than your editorial.

First of all, are we now to trust the man (Hodel) who reneged on his word in the matter of oil permits for drilling in the West Coast? Are we now to trust an Administration that has confronted environmentalists at every turn and used lame excuses such as budget restrictions, corporate business losses, etc., to let our national parks deteriorate?

In my opinion, let the area be as it is. Wildlife has now adapted to this environment and the area is not unsightly. Think of the harm that would ensue when the monstrous earth-moving and destruction equipment is put in place.

The suggestion to restore Hetch Hetchy has pitted friendly forces one against the other on this matter while more important matters are unattended, such as oil wells on the West Coast and environmental water cleanup.
