Unrest in the Philippines
President Reagan’s condemnation of the coup attempt and “unqualified support” for Aquino’s government are purely rhetorical.
The Aquino government needs no more assurances and promises. What it needs is action. It needs food, clothing and medicine for its people. It needs a break in paying the $28-billion legacy left by the Marcos regime. It needs help in stopping the burgeoning population. It needs machineries and technologies--not words, not guns and bullets.
Just give them enough food to eat and there will be no more attempted coup d’etats . Self-reliance is what is needed, not palliatives.
