Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger informed Israel that the United States has approved a package of economic cooperation measures to ease the burden of Israel’s decision to abort the Lavi fighter jet project, a U.S. official said. The official said Weinberger outlined the new measures in a letter to Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The new compensation increases by $100 million--for a new total of $400 million--the amount of the annual U.S. military aid Israel is allowed to spend domestically for military needs.
