U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar arrived in Tehran today to try to arrange a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War.

Neither Iraq nor Iran reported attacks on Persian Gulf shipping or new combat in the hours after his arrival, indicating that they may observe a cease-fire during Perez de Cuellar’s peace mission to the region.

Perez de Cuellar arrived in Tehran at 7:20 p.m. after a flight from Paris and was greeted by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and senior officials, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
