Chiles Admits to Fine in Howe Case

Share

Eddie Chiles, owner of the Texas Rangers, admitted Friday that Commissioner Peter Ueberroth had fined the club for calling up pitcher Steve Howe from the minors too soon.

Chiles said Ueberroth met with him and Ranger President Mike Stone, and “He did levy a fine.” Chiles, who had earlier denied being fined, declined to disclose the amount, which reportedly was $250,000. Ueberroth has the power to levy a fine up to that amount.

Ueberroth had asked clubs this season to keep players returning from drug rehabilitation in the minor leagues for 60 to 90 days to determine if they have controlled their problem. Howe, the former Dodger who has a history of drug problems, was signed to a minor league contract by Texas July 12 and called up Aug. 6.
