Carl Lewis is claiming that Ben Johnson made a false start in setting his 100-meter world record of 9.83 seconds at the World Championships in Rome last week, Swedish daily Expressen reported in Stockholm.
“I knew it,” Lewis was quoted as saying after viewing photos of the start. “Now I am convinced that Ben Johnson went too early. We should have been recalled. Just look at it. I remember when I came out of the starting blocks, I saw Johnson had already started running. I wondered how it was possible. Now I know.
“Frankly speaking, I say it was wrong to allow the record. Ben Johnson made a false start.”
