A proposal by a firm in Britain to build a catacomb under the Irish Sea for storing radioactive waste from a nuclear reprocessing plant with a history of leaks provoked a chorus of angry protests in Ireland. Opposition parties united in condemning the proposal by British Nuclear Fuels for the dump under the Irish Sea, which separates the two island nations. Under the proposal, British Nuclear Fuels would build the nuclear waste dump on the seabed and link it by tunnels to the Sellafield plant, renamed from Windscale after radioactive leaks caused adverse publicity.
