Advertising by the NRA

I realize the problems involved in refusing advertising. However, the NRA ad is so outrageous as to demand comment. The title and picture could hardly be more provocative. But what is worse is the implication. Since we cannot be adequately protected by the police, our only alternative is to arm ourselves or submit meekly to abuse. Is it possible that the NRA envisions an America where the majority of the citizens go about with side arms?

I have never written in complaint to a newspaper before and I am aware that little can be done to inhibit the NRA with its monumental funding. However, that fact that the ad appeared on the day that Pope John Paul II arrived in the U.S. was most grating. What a reception for a man of peace!

There is something very close to out-and-out falsehood in the ad. I am sure most policemen support the Constitution. However, most police organizations support some limitation on the possession of firearms.
