Tennis Roundup : Smid Upsets Perez-Roldan at Geneva

Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia upset fourth-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-2, 7-6, Friday to reach the semifinals of a $231,000 tournament at Geneva.

Perez-Roldan, 17, the 1985 French Open junior champion, is ranked No. 20 in the world. Smid is ranked No. 37.

In today’s semifinals, the unseeded Smid, who won at Geneva in 1985, will face top-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, who defeated Thierry Tulasne of France, 7-6, 6-4.

Gomez had beaten Tulasne in each of their five previous meetings.

In the other semifinal, Claudio Mezzadri of Switzerland will meet sixth-seeded Ulf Stenlund of Sweden. Mezzadri ousted countryman Roland Stadler, 6-4, 6-1, while Stenlund rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Horacio de la Pena of Argentina.

At Tokyo, top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina overcame a slow start to beat Etsuko Inoue of Japan, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Pan Pacific Women’s Open.

Inoue, Japan’s No. 1 player and ranked 42nd in the world, broke service in the first game as Sabatini, ranked eighth in the world, double-faulted twice.

Sabatini again double-faulted twice in the third game and Inoue took a 2-1 lead. But Sabatini then won five straight games and the set.

Sabatini broke serve in the fourth and sixth games of the second set, while Inoue broke in the fifth game.

In other quarterfinal matches, second-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria overcame Marianne Werdel, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1; Katerina Maleeva, Manuela’s sister, trounced Dianne Balestrat of Australia, 6-2, 6-0, and Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden outlasted Barbara Potter, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

In today’s semifinals, Sabatini meets Katerina Maleeva, and Manuela Maleeva plays Lindqvist.
