Rereading the Constitution

Thank you for the most excellent special report, “We the People,” (Sept. 13).

As I was rereading the Constitution some years after the last time which took place in college, I could not help but realize how remarkable the men were who handled the beginning of our country and the documents they formulated that we have followed ever since.

Certainly the two great omissions in the Constitution dealing with women’s suffrage and the issue of slavery affected our country’s development and growth, but the framework was there and has been used to remedy the defects to some degree.

We still have a long way to go and I would only hope that our present Congress, the executive branch and the judicial members of our government do themselves and the citizens a favor and reread the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They might take heart and pause for reflection as to how the members of Congress in those very early days worked together and if necessary used compromise to accomplish their aims.

I would also suggest that we not wait another 200 years to remind the people of the founding of this country, but that every school child periodically be exposed to the required reading of the three great charters mentioned above.
