Detroit teachers went to work, putting an end to a three-week walkout, while negotiators in Chicago tried to agree to terms in a strike that has kept 430,000 students out of school. Nationwide, more than 500,000 students were affected by strikes in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Washington, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The tentative three-year pact for the Detroit teachers calls for an unconditional 6.5% raise in 1987-88 and an increase of 13% over the following two years tied to new sources of revenue being sought for the district.
