Schools and Tax Rebate

A former student visited me recently, requesting my address for an invitation to his wedding. I was delighted to see him and learn that all my concerns for his future had been rewarded.

Tony told me that his high school sweetheart, who had influenced him in changing low grades to the B’s and A’s he was capable of receiving, was now going to be his wife. He told me he had gotten a wonderful paying job and was trying to decide where they should settle down. “I’ll be making $32,000 a year,” he said, giving little indication that this was extraordinary for a high school graduate.

“Tony,” I answered, “Do you know how long it took me to make $32,000?” “How long?” he queried. “Thirty years. I taught for 30 years before I made that kind of money.” “Wow!” he said.

Our visit was not only delightful but also revealing to both of us!
