Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole, citing an Amtrak-Conrail accident near Chase, Md., that killed 16 people this year, announced that $42.8 million will be spent to improve safety on the rail corridor between New York and Washington. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, serving the Philadelphia area, will receive $7.5 million and New Jersey Transit will get $6.7 million for equipment that automatically stops trains if they run through warning signals, she said.
