A strike paralyzed transportation north of Manila as hundreds of drivers of buses and jeepneys--elongated minibuses--protested last week’s assassination of leftist leader Leandro Alejandro. In the Philippine capital, President Corazon Aquino ordered a crackdown on graft and corruption as part of a drive to improve the image of her government after the abortive Aug. 28 army mutiny. And the military boosted its strength in the Bicol region where saboteurs have wrecked five bridges.
