Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida imposed a sweeping ban preventing hundreds of Nigerians from engaging in party politics. Until 1992, when Babangida plans to restore civilian rule, all governors, judges, party leaders, police and senior officials active since 1960 will be excluded from elective and public office. All prominent former politicians will be barred for life, he said, charging that the last civilian regime, overthrown by the military in 1983, ruined the economy, rigged elections and caused national dissension. Maj. Gen. Babangida took power in a 1985 coup.
