FILM WOMEN

I was very pleased to read Nancy Mills’ article on female friendships and the media (“Hollywood Discovers Women as Best Buddies,” Sept. 2). I am sure the piece will strike a resounding chord in a large number of women, in and out of the business.

I would like to point out, however, that Nancy Bein, the vice president of motion pictures for television at CBS, seems to have forgotten her own network’s history when she says that the 1982 TV movie “Games Mother Never Taught You” started the trend.

“Cagney & Lacey” went on the air in October, 1981, and it certainly was the trend setter in shows of this sort. The National Organization for Women has been quite active in trying to keep the show on the air whenever there were imminent threats of cancellation, so we are well acquainted with the history of this truly unique show.
