Pacific 10 Roundup : Big Second Quarter Helps San Jose State Defeat Stanford, 24-17

Mike Perez completed 18 of 26 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown, and fullback James Saxon scored twice as San Jose State defeated Stanford, 24-17, Saturday in a nonconference game at Stanford.

Perez, the national total offense leader, completed 14 of 16 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Spartans took an 18-7 lead with three second-quarter touchdowns.

After the Spartans’ first PAT kick was blocked, they failed on two two-point conversion tries.

San Jose State got scoring runs of 6 yards from Kenny Jackson and 2 yards from Saxon, and a 26-yard touchdown pass from Perez to Guy Liggins to account for its first-half points.

Perez opened the second half by directing a 68-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard Saxon run to make it 24-7.

Stanford’s Brad Muster, back in the lineup after sitting out much of the last two games with a sprained ankle, carried 27 times for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Before an estimated crowd of 67,500, San Jose State improved to 3-1, while the Cardinal fell to 0-3, its worst start since the 1983 team went 1-10.

Washington 31, Pacific 3--Aaron Jenkins ran for 3 touchdowns and 107 yards in 18 carries to lead the 18th-ranked Huskies to a nonconference victory over the Tigers at Seattle.

Jenkins, a 6-foot, 233-pound junior, started the Huskies’ first three games at fullback, but was moved to tailback because of injuries to Vince Weathersby and Steve Jones. Jenkins scored on runs of 1, 2 and 27 yards.

Jenkins, slowed by a knee injury suffered while slam dunking a basketball in high school, didn’t become a starter until this season. He is from Stockton, where the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Tigers are located.

The Huskies’ other touchdown came on a one-yard run by fullback Tony Covington in the third quarter.

Washington quarterback Chris Chandler completed 8 of 15 passes for 102 yards.

Washington is 3-1, Pacific 1-3.

Colorado 26, Washington St. 17--Sophomore quarterback Sal Aunese ran for 185 yards and the game-clinching touchdown as the Buffaloes defeated the Cougars in a nonconference game at Boulder, Colo.

Aunese, who hails from San Diego and is No. 3 on the Colorado depth chart, came into the game late in the first quarter in relief of Rick Wheeler, who had started because of an injury to Mark Hatcher, the starting quarterback for the past three years.

The 5-10, 195-pound Aunese picked up his 185 yards in 22 carries and capped his performance with a 22-yard keeper for a touchdown with 1:16 left in the game.

Colorado strong safety Mickey Pruitt had two interceptions off Cougar quarterback Timm Rosenbach. Pruitt’s first interception was returned 18 yards for a touchdown.

Rosenbach completed 28 of 51 passes for 264 yards to continue his emergence as a high-ranked national passer.

Colorado is 2-1, Washington State 2-2.

Texas 61, Oregon State 16--Eric Metcalf rushed for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 53-yard scoring run, to lead the Longhorns to a rout of the Beavers at Austin, Tex.

Fullback Darrin Norris added 85 yards to help the Longhorns snap a four-game losing streak. Texas’ last victory had been a 45-16 win over Texas Christian on Nov. 15, 1986.

The Longhorns did not attempt a pass until the last play of the first half.

It was the first victory for Texas under new Coach David McWilliams, and the 61 points marked the most scored by a Texas team since a 72-15 victory over Rice in 1977, the year that Longhorn running back Earl Campbell won the Heisman Trophy.
