Southwest Roundup : Little Rock Is Hog Heaven for Hurricanes, 51-7

Sophomore Steve Walsh guided Miami to five touchdowns in 12 minutes against Arkansas as the fifth-ranked Hurricanes rolled to a 51-7 victory over the 10th-ranked Razorbacks Saturday at Little Rock, Ark.

Walsh completed 10 of 14 passes for 135 yards as the Hurricanes rolled up 353 yards en route to a 38-0 halftime lead. He wound up with 20 completions in 28 attempts for 215 yards against an Arkansas defense that has ranked in the top 10 nationally each of the past three years and allowed only 25 points in the Razorbacks’ 2-0 start.

Arkansas managed only 38 yards in the first half.

It was a happy homecoming for Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson, an All-Southwest Conference nose guard at Arkansas in the early 1960s and an assistant coach for the Razorbacks in the early 1970s.

Miami was so dominant that when Greg Cox kicked a 44-yard field goal early in the third quarter, the Hurricanes had controlled the ball more than 23 minutes, and the Razorbacks, who pride themselves on ball control, less than 13 minutes.

Miami’s Warren Williams rushed for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Miami extended its regular-season winning streak to 23 games while handing Arkansas its worst defeat since a 61-0 loss to Tulsa in 1943.

Arkansas avoided a shutout by scoring with 3:02 left, capping an 80-yard drive against Miami’s reserves with James Rouse’s 7-yard touchdown run.

Arkansas had won 11 straight in Little Rock.

Texas A&M; 27, So. Mississippi 14--Freshman running back Darren Lewis ran 77 yards for a touchdown in a 10-point third quarter, and freshman Bucky Richardson went 82 yards for a touchdown with 8:08 to play as the 16th-ranked Aggies pulled away from stubborn independent Southern Mississippi at Jackson, Miss.

Texas A&M;’s defense surrendered only 249 yards and allowed Southern Mississippi only one first down in the second half until the Golden Eagles drove 73 yards in 11 plays to score with 5:14 to go on a 5-yard pass from freshman Brett Favre to Robbie Weeks.

Texas A&M;, 2-1 after an opening loss to LSU, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when fullback Matt Gurley raced 69 yards with a screen pass from freshman Lance Pavlas.

Southern Mississippi (1-2) tied the game late in the second quarter on a 52-yard pass play, Favre to Darryl Tillman.

Baylor 36, Texas Tech 22--Quarterback Brad Goebel threw a touchdown pass, Terry Syler kicked three field goals and safety Robert Blackmon had two interceptions as the Bears beat the Red Raiders at Waco, Tex., in the Southwest Conference opener for both teams.

Baylor, defeating Tech for the eighth time in their last nine meetings, improved to 3-1 overall. Tech is 2-2.

Houston 38, Sam Houston St. 34--Freshman Andre Ware threw two touchdown passes and ran four yards for another score to lead the Cougars to a nonconference win at Houston.

Ware, taking charge of the Houston run-and-shoot offense in his college debut, gave new Coach Jack Pardee his first collegiate victory after a 35-0 season-opening loss to Oklahoma State. Sam Houston fell to 2-2.

Sam Houston quarterback Reggie Lewis completed a career-high 29 passes in 46 attempts for 413 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Ware’s touchdown came on pass plays of 53 yards to Jason Phillips and 8 yards to Kimble Anders. Ware’s touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Cougars a 31-17 lead.

Rice 38, SW Texas St. 28--Mark Comalander teamed with wide receiver Keith Lewis on a 40-yard touchdown pass play to start a 21-point fourth-quarter uprising that lifted the Owls to a nonconference victory over Southwest Texas State at Houston.

Junior defensive back William McClay had three interceptions, including one in the end zone, and a fumble recovery for Rice (2-2). Southwest Texas is 0-4.
