General Dynamics Tells Plans for Tallahassee Plant

General Dynamics will produce and assemble tactical radios for the Army in a proposed 200,000-square-foot plant in Tallahassee should its San Diego-based electronics division win a contract that will be awarded during 1988, General Dynamics said Wednesday.

General Dynamics and Tadiran Ltd., an Israeli defense contractor, would create as many as 700 new jobs in Tallahassee if the partnership wins the contract, according to Melville R. Barlow, vice president of General Dynamics’ electronics division. However, no jobs would be created in San Diego, according to General Dynamics spokesman Jack Isabel. General Dynamics selected Tallahassee because the Florida city “met or exceeded our requirements for a location with a skilled labor force, competitive production costs and an attractive community environment,” Barlow said.

Isabel said he did not know if San Diego had been considered for the proposed plant.

The Army is expected to order more than 265,000 of the tactical radio communication systems, according to Barlow.
