Afghan leader Najib was elected president of the country’s legislative Revolutionary Council, official Kabul radio said, a position that makes him head of state. Western diplomats in Islamabad said the move clearly confirms the former secret police chief as Afghanistan’s strongman. A new constitution being drawn up by the Soviet-backed government would greatly expand the powers of the president. Meanwhile, the official Bakhtar news agency reported that Najib has also restored the Islamic element in his name, reverting to Najibullah.
