The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said that it plans to take a major role in developing commercial manufacturing in space and announced the appointment of a former industry executive to head the effort. James T. Rose, a key executive at McDonnell Douglas for 20 years, was named assistant NASA administrator for commercial programs. Rose, whose appointment was announced by Dale Myers, the No. 2 official at the space agency, in a speech before the National Space Club in Washington, was head of McDonnell Douglas’ effort to produce pure drugs aboard the space shuttle.
