Kathleen Russell, Reporter and Arts Critic, Dies
Kathleen W. Russell, an arts critic and reporter, died Sunday at Physicians & Surgeons Hospital after apparently being stricken by a heart attack at her home in Golden Hill. She was 60.
Russell was a reporter with the San Diego Union and a correspondent for Variety. Born in San Fernando, Trinidad, in 1927, she earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto and did graduate work at Oxford University in England. In 1954, she emigrated to the United States.
Russell moved to San Diego County in 1963 and for 20 years worked as a medical writer, arts writer and critic with the Times-Advocate in Escondido.
In 1983 she returned to Trinidad and worked for two years as editor of the Trinidad Express in Port of Spain.
Russell returned to San Diego in 1985 as a free-lance writer. In March she joined the San Diego Union as a reporter covering inland North County.
Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Russell, of Santa Cruz, and a son, Alan Russell, of Santa Monica.
A memorial “gathering” is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the office of Laura Walcher Public Relations, 2827 Presidio Drive.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the San Diego Opera.
