The Justice Department charged that Alaska is interfering with foreign policy by trying to stop the Reagan Administration from approving an international nuclear pact in which plutonium would be shipped through the 49th state. Alaska filed suit in U.S. District Court in Anchorage asking for an urgent court order to stop the government from approving two pacts with Japan and Europe that would permit jumbo jets to transport deadly radioactive plutonium from Europe to Japan with refueling in Alaska.
