Iranian speedboats firing rocket-propelled grenades set an Indian oil tanker ablaze in the Persian Gulf today, and Iraq hit a Greek-flagged vessel in Iran’s oil shuttle service.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards launched rocket-propelled grenades at the 11,712-ton Indian-flagged tanker Spic Emerald, igniting a fire on the vessel. A British frigate assisted the stricken ship, and there were no reported casualties. Iraq said its warplanes hit a “large naval target”--identified later by the insurance broker Lloyd’s of London as the Greek-flagged tanker Felicity--off the Iranian coastline. Officials in Tokyo said they had suspended all shipping in the Persian Gulf because of attacks this week.
